HNTB Field Engineer II in Madison, Wisconsin

Our Madison, WI office seeks a Field Engineer II to join our growing Transportation Construction Services team.

This opportunity entails being responsible for providing engineering inspection and documentation of construction work performed by a contractor in order to monitor the project construction compliance with plans, specifications, and contract provisions, as well as state and local regulations in order to protect the client's interests. Responsible for assisting in the compliance and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans, specifications, and other contract documents for assigned projects. Leverages technical knowledge to assist in the review and interpretation of construction drawings, specifications, and construction reports.

What You'll Do:

  • Assists with and monitors construction field work tasks and activities on a project to ensure conformance to plans and specifications. Reads, comprehends, and checks for compliance with applicable contract documents.

  • Performs or observes on-site material testing. Reviews plans and specifications to determine material requirements (quantities and qualities), pricing of materials, etc. and ensures that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.

  • Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications and identify discrepancies or conflicts within the documents.

  • Reviews contractor’s daily construction reports for accuracy, thoroughness, and consistency. Regularly reviews contractor's as-built mark-ups, documents project progress using video and photos.

  • Consults with Resident Engineer on work progress and construction problems, proactively recommends solutions, assists in the resolution of issues, and acts as a liaison with the engineer of record.

  • Remains current and knowledgeable of industry technology and tools used to perform inspection work through industry resources, training, and research. Gains exposure to new technology and utilizes it (GPS/Rovers) to increase efficiency and accuracy of inspection tasks.

  • Performs office engineer work when needed including but not limited to; prepares meeting agendas and meeting minutes, assists in processing and maintains tracking logs for RFIs, submittals, pay estimates, and other deliverables.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years relevant experience, or

  • Master's degree in Engineering and 1 year relevant experience, or

  • Doctorate degree in Engineering.

What You'll Bring:

  • Construction engineering and inspection of large highway and bridge construction projects in the Madison area and throughout southwest Wisconsin

  • Collaborating with the Transportation Construction Services team and project stakeholders to perform inspection, documentation, and materials verification

  • Identifies complex discrepancies or conflicts within documents and evaluates the quality of work performed by using inspection checklists.

  • Performs increasingly complex calculations, develops plots and graphs using Excel, and drafts detailed reports for project reporting to the client with guidance from more experienced staff.

  • Performs basic shop drawing and submittal review and evaluates the contractor's CPM schedule.

What We Prefer:

  • 2+ years experience working on WisDOT transportation projects

  • WisDOT Highway Technician Certification Program (HTCP) credentials

  • Engineer in Training (EIT)

  • Trained in digital construction management software such as AASHTOWare Project or similar
