HNTB Engineer III - Planning and Traffic Operations in Arlington, Virginia

What We're Looking For

Within a given discipline, is competent to complete engineering-related tasks including research, development, calculations, design and delivery with minimal direction. On tasks basis, is responsible for preparation and completion of discipline engineering efforts that are responsive to project needs. Coordinates preparation of design details, plans, and drawings within assigned task areas.

HNTB is seeking an enthusiast regarding all modes of transportation and mobility of the future. The Engineer III – Planning and Traffic Operations in our Arlington, VA office provides operations planning leads tasks on major multi-modal transportation project across the Mid-Atlantic region. As a key member of our team, you provide creative solutions, direct client interaction, deliver projects successfully, and grow business. Strong interest in emerging transportation issues facing our clients is a plus.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Responsible for proactively managing the task's technical budget (direct labor and expenses, including technical sub-consultants), schedule, technical requirements, project communications and HNTB’s 4 for 4 performance: delivery of quality work, on time, on budget and to the client’s satisfaction on every project .Most importantly, has a 'can do' attitude.

  • Proven ability to develop and sustain trusted relationships with clients

  • Proven ability to deliver work in multi-modal planning and traffic operations

  • Past experience supporting complex multimodal projects involving operations analysis, traffic modeling, safety analysis and forecasting

  • Provide general technical support and assist in development of traffic engineering criteria for design projects

  • Prepare staff hour estimates, concept reports and project scopes

  • Assist in the mentoring, oversight, scheduling, and checking of work of a dynamic project team and work closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects

  • Develop and mentor junior staff

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master’s degree in Transportation Planning, Traffic Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field

  • 6-7 years relevant experience preferred

  • PE/AICP

  • In depth knowledge of principles for promoting walking, biking and transit use

  • Ability to develop creative solutions to balance travel modes within limited rights of way.

  • Understanding of traffic operations and design principles required

  • Familiarity with pertinent national, state (VDOT, DDOT and Maryland SHA), local, and industry standards

  • Thorough understanding and application of FHWA’s Volume III: Guidelines for Applying Traffic Micro- simulation Modeling Software, VDOT’s Traffic Operations and Safety Analysis Manual, HCM 2010, HSM, ISAT, and MUTCD

  • High-level of expertise in the following software: VISSIM, Synchro, CORSIM, Sidra and HCS

  • Familiarity with Cube

  • Experience in completing multi-modal traffic engineering and transportation planning projects with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), District Department of Transportation (DDOT), or Maryland State Highway Administration (MD SHA) preferred

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for completion of discipline engineering project elements such as reports, designs, specifications and plans.

  • Responsible for coordination and productivity of subordinates. Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineers.

  • Works closely with other disciplines and multi-discipline projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

  • 5 years relevant experience
