HNTB Group Director - Transportation in Arlington, Virginia

What We're Looking For

Responsible for leading a professional or technical multi-discipline group in the design, development and delivery of project tasks while managing scope, budget, and quality control. Oversees departments and sections financial metrics to ensure adherence with the group’s goals and in alignment with office expectations. The Group Director collaborates with leadership across the office and division to apply the firm’s strategic sales and planning approaches while assisting with project pursuits and proposals. This position coordinates project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the proper resources at the appropriate time. Responsible for technical coaching and mentoring and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high-quality service.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Actively manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.

  • Establishes and/or reviews priorities and work schedules and coordinates resource needs/assignments.

  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.

  • Responsible for the hiring, supervision, mentoring, professional development, evaluation and termination of department staff members.

  • Works to develop technical strategies and procedures. Monitors and develops appropriate professional standards and integrates the plans and metrics for quality assurance through all phases of project delivery.

  • Works to enhance and increase the revenue base of the core transportation practice (Road, Bridge, Site/Civil). Collaborates with and supports the Office Leader, Client Service Leaders and Market Sector Leaders in accomplishing their sales and performance goals. Assists in setting sales goals for the core transportation practice and assists in developing and implementing a strategic plan to include identifying market opportunities to achieve sales goals.

  • Will be responsible for oversight and supervision of personnel resources within the assigned core practice for a geographic location, including monitoring recruiting and retaining all core market staff, including managing TOJ targets. The Transportation Group Director will be responsible for all HR actions including making recommendations to the Office Management Team regarding adding or decreasing staff based upon detailed input and review of labor projections. Strives to ensure appropriate staff and other specific resources are available for support of core practice work opportunities. Responsible to Office Management Team for strategic and operational performance of the core market practice.

  • Leads staff on multiple projects (and possibly in multiple offices) in the core practice. Provides technical direction and supervision of projects and staff.

  • Assures that the technical, administrative, work hour and schedule targets are met within the framework of established policy and in accordance with the applicable professional standards, design control procedures, and design guidelines.

  • Works to enhance communication, coordination and cooperation of all core practitioners to work as a cohesive unit.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master’s degree

  • 15 years practical experience

  • 6 years supervisory experience

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) a plus

  • Experience working with VDOT, DDOT and MdSHA preferred.

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Directs and supervises the development and management of the operating budgets for the departments within the Group and coordination with the office's budget.

  • Responsible for the oversight of the group (multiple departments) activities, establish priorities and assign staff to projects. Collaborate with other groups, offices and divisions on work-sharing needs and opportunities.

  • Drives the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits and markets with the Group and office, including development of strategic planning strategies.

  • Drives the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the group.

  • Drives the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process including Work Planning, Monthly Project Reviews and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client's satisfaction.

  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities

  • Maintains client contacts to ensure client satisfaction. Leads and assists in sales and marketing efforts for department's growth.

  • Assists in the development and execution of the office strategic plan. May participate of the Office Leadership Team (OLT)

  • Recruits, hires, develops and retains department staff within the group, including supporting Department Managers with the development of plans for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession planning.

  • Manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 12 years of practical experience including 4 years of supervisory experience
