HNTB Project Engineer - Digital Transformation in Arlington, Virginia
What We're Looking For
You will be part of a mission-driven, cross-functional team responsible for delivering a digital maintenance and engineering inspection program for the rail group of the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA). Your work will benefit the millions of riders who use the rail transit system of the national capital region.
You will be responsible for supporting project management and planning, gathering and documenting requirements, analyzing engineering documents, acting as liaison and integrator between end-users and software developers, implementing software and hardware tools at field locations around the national capital region, training end-users, and developing lessons learned as you go along.
Help bring Metro "Back to Good" by improving the Metrorail system's safety and reliability through digital automation with a new career opportunity starting in January 2023.
This job would be a good fit for you if you like to solve complex public sector problems that need crosscutting solutions. You will work as part of an interdisciplinary team--supporting the project manager and deputy project manager--with project planning, initiation, and execution.
Excellent with Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint)
Excellent at workflow diagramming and process engineering
Excellent at eliciting end-user requirements and documenting them in a specification
Excellent at analyzing maintenance and engineering documents such as technical manuals, work procedures, schematics, and plans
Good at technical and persuasive writing
Proficient at scheduling meetings, drafting agendas, and writing minutes
Proficient at conducting in-person training
Proficient at documenting issues and working with end-users for resolution, or elevating issues to management
Proficient at preparing reports with narratives, charts, and graphs
Familiar with methods of testing new software applications
Experience, Qualities, and Attributes for Success:
You approach problems with a systems engineering mindset.
You are good at engaging with a wide range of stakeholders from the conference room to the field.
You have your own transportation and are comfortable traveling to Metro locations in DC, Maryland, and Virginia to meet with end users.
You listen to stakeholders, are empathetic, and will be an advocate for the Metrorail system, the people who maintain the system, and the millions of riders.
You have professional experience in one or more of the following fields: transit, transportation, logistics, or construction.
You are organized, a self-starter, and can work with a moderate degree of autonomy.
You are comfortable with ambiguity but are solutions-oriented and can break down that uncertainty into component requests for information to increase knowledge.
You can be doggedly patient but also have an afterburner to work hard and fast when needed.
You can think critically and analytically.
You can maintain focus on what is most important even when distracted or pulled off topic.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
Professional Engineer (PE)
Prior experience working on a new software application or electromechanical system rollout
In lieu of PE, hold Project Management Professional (PMP), Lean Six Sigma, or other relevant organizational improvement certification
Experience in a rail sub-discipline (ATC/signals, power, track)
Experience developing analytical tools and dashboards in PowerBI, Tableau, or similar
What You'll Need
Responsible for the planning and distribution of discipline-specific work, and adherence the to the schedule and budget on projects.
Assists in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.
Assists with the development of scope of work and level of effort for projects and/or assignments within discipline.
Oversees completeness and accuracy of project team’s work within the technical discipline. Guides and mentors team to overall project objectives.
Coordinates technical aspects of project with client counterpart and teaming partners at staff level for work within the discipline.
Works closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 6 years of relevant experience
Master’s degree in Engineering and 5 years of relevant experience
PhD in Engineering and 4 years of relevant experience
