Job Summary

Coordinates and implements public involvement programs for clients to facilitate communication and acceptance of projects and initiatives.

Essential Responsibility

  • Assists in research projects relative to planning-related engagement and communication activities such as transportation studies and environmental impact evaluations.

  • Prepares and coordinates dissemination of community relations materials, facts and information about client activities to external agencies, associations, and news organizations using print, periodicals, radio and/or visual communication media.

  • Completes routine records and reports related to public involvement meetings and public hearings.

  • Helps coordinate community meetings including scheduling, determining location, and ensuring proper setup and materials are present.

  • May interact with clients to coordinate implementation of communication programs.

  • Drafts speeches, create and design presentation materials, and/or compose correspondence for use in mailings and/or meetings.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Helps plan, and coordinates and implements public involvement programs for clients to facilitate communication and acceptance of projects and initiatives.

  • Develop, implement and manage social media campaigns in alignment with program and project strategic communications plans.

  • Provide creative direction and oversight for a variety of communications campaigns and activities with a focus on social media, digital platforms, video development, collateral and events.

  • Manage copy-writing and editing for the communications team.

  • Develop and deliver speeches, presentation materials, correspondence, and other media for use in presentations, mailings and/or meetings.

  • Attend and actively participate in intra-departmental, public hearings, and public information meetings relative to interpreting stakeholder input.

  • Interact with clients to develop and implement comprehensive communication strategies to manage general public, as well as public officials, input and understanding of projects.

  • Coordinate with local officials, community leaders, and special interest groups regarding transportation projects.

  • Conduct planning, research, development and marketing of department hearings/meetings with the hearing/meeting team.

  • Target specific audiences, determine appropriate messages and coordinate development of presentation materials.

  • Recommend and prepare content and format of public hearing/meeting brochures, displays, news releases and advertisements.

  • Monitor activities being carried out by the public hearing/meeting teams.

  • Assist senior leadership in the development of communication plans and strategies. Determine and recommend how to deliver and manage the information flow outside of the company to diverse audiences. Focus direction and efforts on understanding what audience is to be reached and with what message.

Responsible for trade/industry relations and interface with all professional associations.

  • Coordinate efforts and trade show participation.

  • Responsible for unit media relations and preparation and release of newsworthy information in accordance with direction from leadership.

Basic Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Journalism or related field

4 years related experience

Preferred Qualification/Skills

  • Communications, marketing and outreach experience in the infrastructure and transportation (roadway, transit) sector is preferred.

  • Experience in communications and outreach for transportation projects in various phases of development (planning, environmental, design, construction), is preferred.

  • Experience developing, managing and measuring social media campaigns.

  • Experience in:

  • Supporting the development and implementation of communications plans,

  • Public sector communications and stakeholder engagement,

  • Internal and external communications,

  • Digital marketing and web content management,

  • Special event and media planning,

  • Supporting public information and outreach initiatives,

  • Providing creative direction and content development for a variety of collateral including but not limited to newsletters, fact sheets, brochures, articles, blogs, press releases, speeches, reports, and website and social media content,

  • Graphic design,

  • Tracking performance measures for communications campaigns.

  • Proven ability to work with public sector owners/agencies to support communications, marketing and outreach campaigns and coordination with the general public and stakeholders.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications.

  • Ability to thrive in fast-paced environment.

  • Effective time management skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated ability to work well within a team setting and independently with minimal supervision.

  • Attention to detail and good organization skills.

  • Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint.

  • Experience with other programs including InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat, Photoshop and WordPress is preferred.

  • Other duties as assigned or requested by management.

General Work Conditions

Office Environment: Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently, and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use.
