HNTB is seeking a Government Relations Director for our Central Division. This position can be based in any of the following Central Division offices including: Dallas, Austin, Houston, Kansas City or Baton Rouge.
In this position you will direct HNTB’s Central Division government relations (GR) activities and organization to achieve priorities established in the division strategic plan. This includes working closely with HNTB office leaders and their local GR consultants to develop and execute government/public affairs plans for each geography within the division. It also includes working with HNTB’s firm-wide GR personnel to support interactions with key policy makers who influence funding and programs in the infrastructure and transportation industry.
Directs HNTB’s government affairs activities and organization to achieve government affairs priorities established in the company strategic plan. Implements a defined process for interacting with key policy makers who influence funding and programs in the infrastructure and transportation industry. Assists and enables employees of all HNTB companies to establish and achieve government relations goals.
Builds relationships with elected and appointed government officials and staff to promote the strategic plans of HNTB.
Assists with the development of government relations strategies and tactics to achieve HNTB business objectives.
Attends Government Relations functions to gain access and strengthen relationships with elected and appointed officials.
Provides professional writing, research support and preparation of draft technical documents on relevant legislative issues as required.
Collaborates in the development of HNTB messages to government officials, the press and public.
Drafts legislative updates, fact sheets, newsletter articles, and testimony related to HNTB’s government relations priorities.
Assists in establishing priorities for the use of the HNTB PAC and managing the expenditure of PAC funds.
Assists local offices in the hiring and management of local government relations firms.
Assists in government relations training of HNTB staff including best practices and legal/ethics compliance.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Builds relationships and helps others build relationships with elected and appointed government officials and staff to advance the strategic plans and promote the interests of HNTB.
Assists in establishing priorities for the use of the HNTB PAC, manages the expenditure of PAC funds within the division, and supports compliance with state/local regulations and agency-level rules and requirements.
Works with HNTB Office of Compliance and outside counsel to ensure all GR activity is conducted in accordance with the law in all jurisdictions.
10 years related experience working with elected officials or on political campaigns
Leadership experience in government relations for a corporation, infrastructure advocacy organization or transportation agency
Knowledge of federal, state and local political process
General Work Conditions
Office Environment: Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently, and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use.
