HNTB Architectural Historian in Bellevue, Washington

What We're Looking For

Develop plans and policies to meet with social economic, and physical needs of communities, including land use transportation planning, transit planning, environmental planning, development, public facilities, and parks and recreational facilities. Performs all aspects of planning assignments and may begin to focus expertise. Work emphasizes design and technical aspects of projects but may include limited task assignee duties and tasks associated with business development. May oversee the work of less experienced staff.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Architectural Historian till assist with developing plans and policies to meet the social, economic, and physical needs of communities, including land use transportation planning, transit planning, environmental planning and development, public facilities, and parks and recreation facilities. Assists in the development of technical solutions and strategies for medium to large sized planning projects to ensure that the client's technical requirements for all planning aspects of projects are fully met. Regular task assignee on multiple projects.Under supervision of the Lead Architectural Historian, assist with all aspects of cultural and historical assessment and planning. Work emphasizes surveying and evaluating cultural resources (historic built environment assessment of potential effects as required under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and/or state environmental protection acts; preparing cultural technical reports/letters containing resource assessments and analysis of effects, and collaborating and coordinating with teams, stakeholders, tribes, and other agencies.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master’s Degree or all coursework completed to receive a Master's Degreee in Historic Preservation or closely related field and 1 to 5 years relevant experience.

  • Possess an understanding of Cultural Resource requirements under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), WA State Environmental Protection Act, and Washington State Governor's Executive Order 05-05

  • Literature Search - conduct literature reviews using Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) files to identify previously recorded cultural resources within the project vicinity. Ability to conduct similar literature reviews in Oregon, California and other western states

  • Field Survey and Inventory Form Preparation - assist in the completion of surveys to identify cultural resources located within the APE with emphasis on resources of the historic built environment

  • Assist other HNTB cultural resources staff with research and writing of reports, memoranda and planning projects and other documents to support delivery of needed compliance with federal, state and local cultural resources regulations

  • Cultural Resources Technical Reports - assists in the preparation of cultural resources technical reports that cover historic resources for compliance with Section 106 requirements, in accordance with WSDOT and DAHP policy or similar policies in Oregon, California and other western states

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assists in directing small-scale planning projects and portions of larger projects from concept development through submission drawings.

  • Coordinates with sub-consultants and in-house personnel on a regular basis to complete assigned tasks. Some contact with clients.

  • Prepares technical plans and reports, written reports on small to medium sized planning projects, scopes of work, fee proposals and responses to Request for Proposals.

  • Final production of environmental documents, comprehensive plans and reports, graphics associated with public meetings, presentation drawings, reports, etc.

  • Conducts research and detailed analysis of data.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Environmental Science or relevant field

  • 2 years of relevant experience
