HNTB’s Aviation practice is growing, and the time is right to join HNTB! We are currently hiring an Aviation Project Engineer in our Seattle (Bellevue) WA office.

HNTB Aviation Division conducts a wide range of aviation planning, engineering design and construction administration services primarily at large hub airports, including SEA, PDX, SLC and others.

The position involves coordination, project execution and control with a minimum of oversight for airport development projects, including airside (runways, taxiways, etc.) and terminal (ramp and ramp services) and landside (roadways, parking, circulation, etc.) elements.

Job Summary

Provides coordination of project execution and control, in a given discipline area, to achieve continuity of purpose within scope, budget, and time schedules from initial start-up through project closeout. Also accountable for handling specific design aspects on projects appropriate to discipline field. Coordinates efforts of assigned design team to ensure completeness and accuracy of design effort. Serves as technical liaison with client on project efforts. Responsible for gross revenue of <$1M.

Essential Responsibility

  • Responsible for the delivery of project discipline scope elements within budget and schedule.

  • Oversees completeness and accuracy of project team’s work. Guides team to overall project objectives.

  • Serves as technical liaison with client at staff level for work within the discipline.

  • Assists with project management duties.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • The Project Engineer manages scope, budget, design, and time schedules from initial start-up through project closeout, and is accountable for handling and coordination among assigned design team design aspects on projects. Projects can consist of any service from feasibility analysis through final designs (drawings, specifications and estimates).

  • Develop plans, specifications, and reports.

  • Calculate quantity and cost estimates.

  • Schedule, direct, and supervise planning and design work by others

  • Perform quality reviews of work performed by others

  • Oversee completeness and accuracy of project team’s work. Guide team to overall project objectives

  • Coordinate directly with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.

  • Conduct frequent client contact at staff level. Serve as technical liaison with client at staff level within the discipline.

  • Deliver project discipline scope elements within budget and schedule.

  • Assist with project management duties

Basic Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Engineering

6 years relevant experience

Preferred Qualification/Skills

  • Professional Engineer (Civil) registration, or ability to obtain quickly through reciprocity.

  • 8+ years of Aviation related project experience

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills - Confortable discussing design decisions with clients

  • Ability to work independently and conduct engineering design tasks with limited supervision

Experience with the following:

  • Design engineering on airport development or rehabilitation projects.

  • Familiarity with airport design standards including FAA Advisory Circulars

  • Experience preparing technical construction specifications for airport projects

  • Related work experience with AutoCAD/Civil 3D.

  • Familiarity with MS Office suite

  • AeroTurn experience

  • Familiarity with airport terminal areas, such as aircraft parking, passenger boarding bridges, utility coordination

  • Familiarity with airspace and/or line-of-sight studies

  • Airfield lighting and/or Navaid layout and design experience

  • Familiarity with airport grading and utility design in AutoCAD Civil 3D

  • Quantity & cost estimating

  • QA/QC experience

  • Construction phasing plan development

  • Construction administration and/or resident engineering experience

  • Airport and/or relationships with airport and/or FAA personnel a plus.

General Work Conditions

Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
