HNTB Scientist IV in Bellevue, Washington

What We're Looking For

HNTB is looking for a biologist or ecologist with experience navigating complex planning, environmental, and decision-making processes. The candidate will have experience working on transportation and environmental planning projects throughout Washington and will have demonstrated experience in environmental permitting to provide support for the planning and permitting phase of projects.

Primary focus will include the following functions:

  • Conducts field work, including assessments and determination of wetlands, streams, and other sensitive areas.

  • Serves as a task lead or a principal author in the preparation of reports, including wetland and stream reports, Endangered Species Act documentation, mitigation reports, monitoring reports, and other relevant reports needed for projects.

  • Examinesandevaluatesexisting conditionsandpotential environmental impactsduringplanning,design,and construction of proposed projects.

  • Provides technical support to project managers on environmental issues during the planning, design, or construction of projects

  • Leads the preparation of applications and supporting documents for local, state, and federal environmental permits as well as other regulatory requirements

  • Attends and/or lead various meetings regarding environmental issues with clients, regulatory agencies, other engineering firms, and staff.

  • Supportsmarketing efforts andproposalpreparationofpotentialopportunitiesorprojects.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Knowledge of local flora and regional wetland regulations

  • Experience in preparing wetland delineation reports, functional assessments, mitigation plans, and environmental compliance/permitting documents

  • ​Understanding of the environmental permitting process and the ability to work with clients and regulatory agencies

  • Excellent technical writing, organizational, and communication skills to effectively interact with staff and clients

  • Use of mobile GPS and GIS technologies

  • Must be able to work independently with appropriate level of supervision

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver license and insurable driving record

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor'sdegreeinBiology,Ecology,EnvironmentalScience,orrelatedfieldand 6 years relevantexperience

  • Master'sDegreeinBiology,Ecology,EnvironmentalScience,orrelatedfieldand5 years of relevant experience

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and conducts with other staff in the collection and analyzing of data obtained for projects.

  • Determines or develops best methodology and technical approaches for conducting analysis in field work; sets up test equipment as necessary to obtain scientific data.

  • Examines and evaluates present and future potential environmental science effects relating to the planning, design, and construction of proposed projects.

  • Serves as task lead or principal author in the preparation of reports, on environmental science effects of projects.

  • Provides technical scientific support on environmental issues to project managers during the planning, design, or construction of projects.

  • Performs review of work to ensure the design or construction are in compliance with design criteria and scientific specifications and determines the need for additional investigations, studies, or alternate plans or designs if necessary.

  • Supports the marketing and proposal preparation of potential opportunities or projects.

  • Leads the preparation of applications and supporting documents for local, state, and federal environmental permits as well as other regulatory compliance laws and regulations.

  • Assists in organizing, preparation, public meetings as well as possible participation in public meetings.

  • Attends various meetings with clients, other engineering firms, and staff and may lead discussion on environmental science issues.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology, or related field and 6 years relevant experience

  • Master's Degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology, or related field and 5 years of relevant experience
