Overview

HNTB is currently providing construction management on some of the area’s most exciting and challenging projects – the first light rail to be constructed on a floating bridge, a brand-new waterfront for downtown Seattle, and replacement of a hundred-year-oldwooden railroad trestle.We are currently seeking a highly qualified Sr. Resident Engineer for our Bellevue, WA office.

Job Summary

Responsible for overall field contract management, administration and coordination on mid to large size projects of a diverse and complex nature. Has full technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing and coordinating construction engineering assignments involving unique or controversial problems which significantly affect major corporate programs. Responsible for monitoring assigned staff to determine that the contractor's activities are monitored and controlled in accordance with design specifications and contractual requirements. Acts as on-site liaison between Client, Company Personnel and Contractor I in resolution of project issues. Acts as a specialist in the application of advanced concepts, principles, techniques and procedures for an assigned area of responsibility. Analyzes complex construction/design problems requiring the development of new or improved techniques or procedures and consults with design engineering personnel. Represents projects at meetings and conferences.

Essential Responsibility

  • Reviews and drafts responses to Contractor's correspondence as required. Implements on site procedures to assist staff in performing their work.

  • Collects data to brief clients on project issues and provides possible resolutions.

  • Reads and interprets plans.

  • Monitors contractor progress and compares with reviewed progress schedule.

  • Mentors and trains staff.

  • Administers JPI's, estimates to complete and budget.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

She/he would be part of a geographic CM team on the project and may also be focused around QV discipline (structures, earthwork, paving, electrical, etc.). The Sr. RE would manage part of QV inspection team (2-3 chief inspectors who each have 2 inspection staff under them), provide technical guidance to QV team, assist with issue resolution, change management, negotiation of change orders, & conducting independent estimate, and coordinate with design review team and client for issue resolution, MOT coordination, and general project coordination.

Must have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management plus 15 years’ experience

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to maintain good working relationships with clients, contractors, management, and coworkers.

  • Proficiency with computer applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Acrobat Adobe, and Bluebeam, and with mobile devices such as tablet computers.

  • A valid driver’s license and good driving record.

  • Prior Design/Build experience required.

Field Environment:

  • Work frequently requires working at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in a field environment. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment, and doing extensive walking. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use.

  • Depending on the specific project, the job may require climbing to various elevations, ability to bend, twist and turn in close clearances. Select jobs may require work near heavy construction equipment, railroad right of ways, bridges, construction sites, tunnels and airport runways. Work environment may require use of safety equipment including fall equipment. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.

Basic Qualification

15 years relevant experience

Preferred Qualification/Skills

  • Professional Engineer highly preferred

  • WSDOT experience preferred

  • Large project experience preferred

General Work Conditions

Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking.
