HNTB New Grad Civil Engineer: Traffic - Summer 2024 in Boston, Massachusetts

This opportunity entails being responsible for assisting in the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans and specifications for assigned projects. This position performs research, development, calculations, design and delivery in partnership with the project team. Applies engineering techniques, procedures and design criteria for projects ranging in size and complexity. Leverages technical knowledge to assist in the execution and evaluation of project designs. Develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support the project execution using current drawing and technical tools, programs and software. As a member of the team, you will contribute to the successful project delivery for a diverse range of projects for HNTB’s clients.

As an Entry-Level Traffic Engineer, you will play a vital role in analyzing, designing, and optimizing transportation systems. You will work closely with mid and senior traffic engineers and a multidisciplinary team to develop innovative solutions that enhance traffic flow, promote safety, and improve the overall performance of transportation networks. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated new graduate to launch their career and make a meaningful impact in the field of traffic engineering.

Specific tasks performed by our Traffic Engineers include:

•Support the optimization of traffic signal systems, including signal timing and phasing, signal coordination, transit signal priority and adaptive traffic control systems.

•Collaborate with engineers to conduct traffic flow analysis, capacity analysis, and simulation modeling using software such as VISSIM, SYNCHRO, Sidra or HCS.

•Contribute to the development of transportation management plans, focusing on improving traffic operations and reducing congestion during construction or special events.

•Assist in the design of traffic elements of roadways, such as intersections, traffic signal layouts, pavement markings and signage

•Participate in the collection of traffic data, including traffic volume counts, travel time studies, traffic signal inventories, traffic observations and speed studies.

•Assist in the preparation of technical reports, drawings, and presentations summarizing findings, recommendations, and project deliverables.

The position is based out of our Boston, Massachusetts office.

What You'll Do:

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.

  • Supports the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.

  • Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.

  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.

  • Supports engineering teams with various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

What You'll Bring:

  • Exhibits an understanding of engineering principles relevant to the discipline.

  • Attains knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, and familiarity with MicroStation and/or AutoCad or other software.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret traffic data.

  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to convey technical concepts to team members and stakeholders.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and effectively manage multiple tasks and deadlines.

What We Prefer:

  • Master's degree in Engineering

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification

  • Knowledgeable in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD

  • Strong interest in transportation and infrastructure

  • Internship or co-op experience in traffic engineering or related field is desirable.
