HNTB New Grad Electrical Engineer I – Traction Power Systems (TPS) in Chelmsford, Massachusetts

What We're Looking For

HNTB, one of the largest and most respected design firms in the transportation industry, is seeking candidates for the New Grad Engineer I- Traction Power Systems in our Chelmsford, MA office.

Traction power systems provide power to operate electrified rail systems throughout the country and worldwide. HNTB is a leader in this field within the United States in all facets, from initial planning, through technical design, project management and through to construction support. Traction power systems involve elements of engineering for transmission and distribution of electrical power including power transformation, switchgear, battery systems and substation controls, relay protection and automation systems with a specialty application for rail systems.

Additionally, HNTB electrical team also are actively involved in associated electrical power systems related to rail and transportation projects. This type of work involves design of system lighting, grounding, passenger stations, rail yards and facilities, signal power and utility power interfaces including loadflow studies, short circuit studies and arc flash analysis.

This is for an Entry level electrical engineer who will be actively involved in all aspects of the electrical team assisting in preparing designs, reports and studies for traction power system improvements, capital projects and for various rail projects from feasibility through final design and construction.

Expected activities include preparing/producing engineering design submittals , providing TPS engineering review and analysis, developing cost estimates/projections and provide alternatives for adjustments to contain construction costs within budget, participating in project meetings, reviewing contractor submittals, development of CAD drawings from past project samples, cross referencing drawings in support of the quality process, supporting field inspections, preparing engineering estimating, packaging and checking of peer submittal documents, and performing basic electrical calculations.

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.

  • Supports the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.

  • Assists in the preparation of project quantity and cost estimates.

  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.

  • Supports engineering teams with various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

What You'll Bring:

  • Be a key member of the production staff using CAD, spreadsheets and specialist software in order to support the preparation and modification of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.

  • Develop understanding of key areas of the work and apply these principles and working basis to produce engineering designs efficiently and effectively as part of a larger team.

  • Applicant would be working with other production staff under the direction of senior department engineers and take personal responsibility for quality completion of project specific tasks.

  • Support engineering teams with various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.

  • Be innovative and pro-active with good communications skills.

  • Continue to take direction of Sr department staff while continuing learning and development, in an active production environment.

  • Gain knowledge of standard engineering processes and document production within the discipline.

  • Be adaptable with a flexible work approach and coordinate with supervisors starting new tasks, developing design and completing and closing out work tasks.

  • Have goals of achieving EIT and PE certifications.

  • Perform other duties as assigned

What We Prefer:

  • BS in Electronic or Electrical Engineering with interest electric power systems

  • GPA 3.0 or higher

  • MS in Engineering with interest electric power systems

  • Knowledgeable in MicroStation and/or AutoCAD , Mathcad, 3-D Cad, Powerpoint, Excel, Word.

  • Loadflow simulation and electrical system software e.g. SKM power tools
