HNTB’s Boston, MA office is seeking a Highway Engineer III to join our Highway design team.

Our team is working on some of the most complex projects in Massachusetts and Rhode Island serving a range of public sector clients. We are dedicated to enhancing our communities, solving infrastructure challenges for our clients and increasing mobility equity.

As a Highway Engineer III, you will coordinate and deliver transportation engineering projects within scope, budget, and time schedules from initial start-up through project closeout. These projects can range from small intersection and multimodal corridor improvement projects to large interchanges, multimodal improvements, bridge reconstruction projects and/or design-build projects. Job responsibilities may also include coordination with our Public Engagement group as well as supporting our Planning group on pursuits and design projects.

Duties include highway design, development of cost estimates, specifications, corridor modeling, public engagement, mobility planning and complete streets design. Our team’s approach is to confidently deliver performance on every project and deliver projects with quality work, on time, on budget and to the client’s satisfaction.

What You'll Do:

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.

  • Assist in the development of project specifications.

  • Responsible for development of discipline specific engineering project elements/deliverables such as reports, designs, and plans.

  • Aids in the coordination and productivity of project team members.

  • Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineering project team members.

  • Works closely with other disciplines and on multi-discipline projects.

  • Performs quality control reviews of discipline - specific engineering project elements/deliverables.

  • Assists with coordination and planning of schedules, hours, and distribution of work within discipline.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 4 years of relevant experience, or

  • Master’s degree in Engineering and 3 year of relevant experience, or

  • PhD in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience

What You'll Bring:

  • Producing and delivering highway design projects from inception through construction phase services.

  • Participating on project pursuits.

  • Leading preparation of design criteria, reports, plans, calculations, estimates, specifications, and designs for transportation projects.

  • Assisting in the development and evaluation of roadway concept alternatives for transportation planning studies.

  • Adapting Complete Streets policy and “Vision Zero” design guidance to roadway design projects that is sensitive to the overall community context.

  • Providing technical review and checks engineering work completed by other

What We Prefer:

  • BS in Civil Engineering, MS preferred

  • 4+ years of professional engineering experience

  • Must have experience with MassDOT, RIDOT and municipal clients

  • Active engagement in local professional and/or civic organizations

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
