HNTB 3D Technical Artist in Chicago, Illinois
What We're Looking For
We are seeking a talented and passionate 3D Technical Artist to join our team. In this role, you will be supporting HNTB's Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) Real-time media group...a team dedicated to developing real-time media for the Built Environment. In this role you will bridge the gap between 3D artists and programmers, ensuring that our Design Models and 3D assets are not only visually stunning but also optimized for performance in our gaming engine deliverables developed primarily in Unity. You will play a critical role in the development process, working closely with both the art and development teams to create high-quality game experiences.

What You'll Do:
Leads and manages the VDC process for construction projects using software such as Revit, Navisworks, SketchUp, etc.
Creates and maintains BIM models using software such as Revit, Navisworks, SketchUp, etc.
Performs clash detection and coordination using software such as Navisworks, BIM 360, etc.
Produces 3D visualizations and animations using software such as Lumion, Enscape, etc.
Implements and oversees VDC technology initiatives such as laser scanning, drones, virtual reality, etc.
Provides support for software and hardware systems that are used by the VDC team.
Works with the VDC team to ensure quality and accuracy of BIM models and deliverables.
Communicates with project stakeholders to understand their needs and requirements.
Trains and mentors junior VDC specialists.
Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need:
Associate’s degree or certificate in computer-aided design (CAD), BIM, VDC, or a related field and 3 years of relevant experience, or
Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field and 1 year of relevant experience, or
In lieu of education, 5 years of relevant experience.
Experienced in the Following:
Asset Development: Collaborate with 3D artists to create, optimize, and integrate 3D models, textures, and animations into the game engine.
Technical Optimization: Identify and resolve performance issues related to 3D assets and scenes, ensuring smooth performance across various platforms.
Shader Development: Work on shader creation and optimization to achieve desired visual effects while maintaining performance standards.
Workflow Improvement: Help develop and maintain best practices for asset creation, including pipelines, tools, and documentation.
Cross-Discipline Collaboration: Work closely with designers, programmers, and artists to ensure a cohesive and efficient workflow, addressing any technical challenges that arise.
Troubleshooting: Diagnose and solve technical issues related to 3D content in the engine, providing support and guidance to team members as needed.
Research and Development: Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies, incorporating new techniques and tools into our workflows.
What we Prefer:
Bachelor’s degree in Art, Computer Science, Game Design, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
Proficiency in 3D DCC software (Blender, Houdini, 3ds Max) and game engines (Unity, Unreal Engine).
Strong understanding of real-time rendering techniques, optimization strategies, and asset integration workflows.
Experience with shader development (HLSL) and scripting languages (C#).
Solid grasp of game development principles and experience working in a collaborative environment.
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.

The approximate pay range for New York is $70,831.98 - $132,809.96. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.

The approximate pay range for the California San Francisco Bay Area is $88,539.97 - $132,809.96. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.
