HNTB Transportation Planner in Chicago, Illinois

What We're Looking For

HNTB is seeking an experienced, organized, motivated Transportation Planner for our Chicago office to support the Urban Mobility Planning Group and support the firm’s renowned planning, design, and engineering services. With minimal supervision develops technical solutions and strategies for small-scale planning projects or for portions of larger projects. Responsible for proactively overseeing other project team members in development of solutions. Task assignee on multiple projects.

We are seeking an individual well-versed in a range of urban planning services, including but not limited to transit planning, network redesign, and technological integration (e.g., fleet electrification), Complete Streets, emerging mobility policy, planning and design (e.g., MaaS, MoD, shared micromobility services, microtransit, etc.), area-wide and corridor planning, parking and curbside management, and equitable policies, performance planning and engagement practices.

The ideal candidate shall have experience in managing complex projects and working alongside multiple team members, including primes, subconsultants, and third-party vendors. They must be well-versed in research and technical aspects of transportation planning. They must understand concept development through project implementation and the methods required to achieve success.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Prepares scopes of work, fee proposals and assists with responses to RFP’s.

  • May oversee the work of less experienced staff. Assists in directing teams for small scaled projects.

  • Conducts research and detailed analysis of data.

  • Interfaces with client group and community stakeholders. Responsible for significant portions of presentations and public facilitation.

  • Identifies and recommends appropriate technical procedures that should be used on a project.

  • Prepares technical plans and reports.

  • Prepares written reports on small to medium sized planning projects.

  • Support studies and planning activities related to multimodal transportation projects.

  • Conduct transportation and land use related research and documentation.

  • Assist in formulating and conducting technical planning studies in a timely and efficient manner and present results in concise, well-written documents.

  • Finalizes production of transportation planning studies, environmental documents, and reports.

  • Coordinates with subconsultants and in-house personnel on a regular basis to complete assigned tasks.

  • Final production of graphical materials associated with public meetings, presentation drawings, reports, etc.

  • Perform technical analysis utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) modeling tools.

  • Prepare graphical materials in support of transportation studies.

  • Uses technical software to perform project analysis.

  • Assists in the preparation of scopes of work, fee proposals and responses to RFP’s.

  • Willingness to travel for project meetings, engagement activities, and pursuit interviews.

  • Demonstrate recent consultancy experience or for candidates from agency backgrounds, a strong aptitude for scoping and communicating project approaches.

  • Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills.

  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency in Microsoft products and analytical programs.

Qualifications:

  • Critical thinker who excels at problem solving and quantitative analysis.

  • Collaborative and positive professional who can establish relationships and positively impact stakeholders within the City of Chicago and its allied and partner agencies and beyond.

  • Knowledge and experience in the application of current planning principles, best practices and procedures as they apply to transportation infrastructure and service delivery with the ability and passion to develop transformative solutions for an equitable future.

Preferred Skills:

  • Master’s degree in City/Urban Planning, Transportation Engineering or related planning field or equivalent experience.

  • 8 years of experience in quantitative transportation analysis and translating technical findings into actionable recommendations (e.g., process, implementation, cost, etc.)

  • AICP registration or Professional Engineer.

  • Active member and participant of planning, engineering, design or community-based organizations and industry associations.
