HNTB Corporation is currently seeking a part-time Traffic Management Operator I working at the Florida Department of Transportation’s Regional Traffic Management Center (RTMC) located in Ft. Myers, Florida .
Entry level position that ensures safe and efficient traffic movement and monitors roadways including detecting, confirming, updating and responding to scheduled and unscheduled traffic incidents, congestion and travel time imbalances.
Entry level operator position performing functions under close supervision and to established procedures.
Performs all basic level duties and will defer more complex issues to a supervisor or more senior operators.
Operate various computer-based traffic management systems to manage traffic and incidents on roadways and improve traffic conditions.
Monitor roadways via CCTV surveillance cameras and detection systems.
Monitor all ITS devices and computer equipment associated with the system.
Maintain advanced knowledge on the operation of all traffic equipment, computers and software associated with the traffic systems.
Utilize traffic equipment for incident management and the improvement of travel time, safety, and quality of life of the traveling motorists and toll customers.
Continually check the accuracy and validity of the messages displayed on all systems.
Aware of all alert messages broadcasted on a particular system.
Enter incident information into computer systems using traffic software.
Become familiar with the roadways and understand the purpose and location of each traffic device (i.e. detector stations, CCTV, and 511).
Alert operator staff to new and existing memos.
Use SOG to detect, dispatch, monitor, and document roadway incidents.
Confer with traffic partners (highway patrol, Road Rangers, Local Law Enforcement, Fire Rescue, etc.) as well as adjacent Traffic Management Centers or other DOT Districts to coordinate resources for incidents that may affect regional travel.
Dispatch Road Rangers and assist Road Rangers with other tasks, such as phone calls, etc.
Performs other duties as assigned.
The operator position is one of the highest profile positions in the RTMC as they are the eyes and ears of detection and management of all activities being handled by the Regional Traffic Management Center. Operator I is the entry level position for RTMC Operators.
RTMC Operators are responsible for the principal monitoring of the roadways including detecting, confirming, updating and responding to scheduled and unscheduled traffic incidents, congestion and travel time imbalances in the geographical coverage area with monitoring and/or surveillance capabilities.
Road Ranger Dispatch, emergency responder notification, and capturing time-sensitive data related to incidents occurring on our roadway network are key responsibilities of an Operator I.
High School Diploma/GED or equivalent
Ability to gain a working knowledge of the SunGuide Software and related systems within the allotted time.
Ability, with supervision, to function as an Operator.
Ability to understand ITS principles.
Skills in interpersonal relationships.
Ability to clearly communicate technical information in non-technical language.
Ability to clearly communicate information over a radio system or network.
Ability and willingness to work alternate work, shift schedules, and be "on-call" 24 hours/day.
Ability to gain acceptable skill in the use of Windows based applications within the allotted time.
Ability to write reports clearly and concisely.
Ability to coordinate real time activities and priorities.
Knowledge of communications and disseminating information via multiple communications devices.

Operator I must successfully complete the initial training program under the supervision of, and monitored by, an RTMC Shift Supervisor and the RTMC Manager. They must then continue to perform acceptably as they acquire additional knowledge and skills through "on the job" training. Assist with report data collection to include monthly reports, travel speed and travel time reports, incident reports and any other reports that are requested.

General Work Conditions
Office Environment: Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently, and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use.
