HNTB Senior Noise Analyst in Golden Valley, Minnesota

What We're Looking For

This position could be based anywhere in the country while working with our Great Lakes Division based team.

Come join our Noise, Air and Environmental Planning group. You’ll have an opportunity to work with an outstanding team on large, complex and exciting transportation and infrastructure projects throughout the country. You will serve as the noise task lead on multiple projects, delivering noise analyses and reports, and advising on the design and implementation of noise barrier mitigation. This position will require close coordination with project managers, environmental staff, engineers and other discipline leads to ensure the client's technical requirements and expectations are fully met. Air quality analysis experience is desired but not a requirement.

This position could be based anywhere in the country while working within our Great Lakes Practice.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Leads noise data collection, modeling, analysis and report writing for projects.

  • Formulates the results of noise analysis into concise, well-written documents.

  • Prepares scopes of work, fee proposals and assists with responses to RFP’s.

  • Attends meetings with clients and responsible agencies and assists with preparation of noise analysis methods and results.

  • Directs, coordinates and reviews technical work performed by other project team members including less experienced staff.

  • Performs quality checks in accordance with project Quality Management Plans.

  • Conducts significant portions of presentations and public facilitation.

  • Maintains office-wide technical standards and maintenance of technical resources, with an emphasis on noise.

Additional essential responsibilities include:

  • Conducts transportation noise studies for highway and transit projects and formulates the results into concise, well-written documents.

  • Prepares environmental impact assessments and related studies.

  • Oversees and participates in development of highway and transit noise analyses and documentation.

  • Attends meetings with clients and responsible agencies and presents noise analysis methods and results.

  • Participates as a subject matter expert in public involvement activities, including presentations at public workshops and public hearings.

  • Coordinates and consults with Federal, State and Local regulatory agencies on scope and impact of project.

  • Researches, writes, and prepares transportation planning studies, NEPA environmental documents, and associated environmental permits.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • 10 years of experience, 8 years related experience (with Master's degree in related field)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Acoustics, Planning, Civil or Environmental Engineering or related field.

  • PE registration or AICP, CEP certification, but not required.

  • Experience in highway or transit noise analysis and modeling.

  • Experience in the use of FHWA and FTA noise modeling and related tools, including Traffic Noise Model (TNM), ArcGIS, MicroStation, and transit noise and vibration impact assessment.

  • Excellent written, oral communication and presentation skills.

  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.

  • Experience with air quality analyses and associated tools (EPA MOVES3 or MOVES2014a (MOVES) and CAL3QHC 2.0 (CAL3QHC)) is desirable but not required.

  • Develops and maintains client meetings and interactions.

  • Conducts or directs research on issues, policies, and concepts pertaining to planning, and formulates recommendations.

  • Develops conceptual planning alternatives for urban and transportation planning projects.

  • Leads tasks under general direction related to the preparation and production of technical plans, studies, written reports, and environmental documents for transportation and infrastructure projects.

  • Responsible for significant portions of presentations and public facilitation.

  • Coordinates with clients, sub-consultants, and in-house personnel on a regular basis to complete assigned tasks.

  • Assists in directing teams for small or medium sized tasks for projects.

  • Mentors and provides direction on the work of less experienced staff.

  • Assists in the preparation of scopes of work, fee proposals and responses to RFP’s for projects.

  • Writes major sections of and leads production of plans, studies, reports, and environmental documents for transportation and infrastructure projects. Also coordinates and synthesizes the contributions of others.

  • Research data sources, gathers data, and conducts analysis of data for use in projects.

  • Develops planning and analysis strategies using tools such as GIS, traffic, or safety software to manipulate data, assess scenarios, and perform project analysis.

  • Leads planning processes and technical solutions that best meet the project needs.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Engineering, or related field and 6 years related professional experience

  • Master's Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, Engineering, or related field and 5 yrs of relevant experience


  • Remains aware of new software tools available and stays current with the latest industry tools.

  • Integrates different sources of data to provide findings and recommendations to more experienced staff to move the project forward and determine solutions.

  • Provides direction to less experienced staff.

  • Develops a research plan and supervises the research and technical analysis of less experienced staff.

  • Leads the preparation of the report by writing portions of the report and reviewing and incorporating materials from others.

  • Manages a portion of the agenda by leading the discussion of an agenda item.

  • Manages ambiguity by operating effectively, even when things are not certain or the way forward is not clear.

  • Collaborates by building partnerships and working cooperatively with external partners (i.e., clients, sub-contractors) to meet shared objectives.

  • Communicates effectively by developing and delivering communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences.

  • Maintains customer focus by building strong client relationships and delivering client-centric solutions.

  • Plans, aligns, and prioritizes work to meet commitments aligned with organizational objectives.

  • Uses resources to find solutions and get the assignment done with a high level of independence.
