The time is right to join HNTB Corporation! HNTB is currently seeking a PTC Field Test Engineer in our Oakland, CA office.

Job Summary

Responsible for conducting Positive Train Control Testing and commissioning in both lab and field environments.

Essential Responsibility

  • Conducts testing and commissioning in both lab and field environments. Must understand Positive Train (PTC) segments including Wayside, Office, Communications and Locomotive.

  • Writes test plans and procedures for various PTC segments.

  • Tests new versions of software for various PTC segments in lab environment.

  • Performs trouble shooting.

  • Interprets wayside track charts, aspect charts and signal drawings.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform design calculations, including safe braking and power draw.

  • Cost estimates for signal material, cable, conduit.

  • Developing complex interlocking circuits.

  • Detailing of signal circuits.

  • Check calculations and drawings.

  • Write detailed technical descriptions for signal system requirements.

  • Develop estimates of engineering hours and costs for proposals.

  • Meet with customers to review technical details of the project

  • Plan design work into specific measurable packages.

  • Organize scheduling of specific tasks and assignments and monitor completion

  • Programming of vital and/or non-vital processors

  • Participate in factory and field testing of signal systems

Basic Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related technical degree

5 years railroad industry experience

In lieu of education, 9 years railroad industry experience

Preferred Qualification/Skills

  • Ability to work independently.Ability to make sound decisions based on site field conditions.

  • RWP qualified or capable of receiving training.

  • Ability to work successfully and professionally with client contacts.

  • Ability to pass drug screening as required by client to work on railroad property.

General Work Conditions

Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
