HNTB Design Manager - Rail Infrastructure in New York, New York

What We're Looking For

HNTB is looking for a Design Manager – Rail Infrastructure in our New York, NY office. This person will be responsible for direction and supervision of a multi-disciplinary technical team. This individual will be responsible for providing guidance and direction. This position supports the technical aspect of project development and delivery including proposal development, scope implementation and change management. Responsible for applying advanced engineering methods, techniques, and analyses to provide solutions, make recommendations and resolve issues. Ensures industry and HNTB standards of design are applied consistently and effectively across projects ranging in discipline, size and complexity. Independently applies knowledge and experience in partnership with internal project team members and external client counterparts. Serves as an advisor on complex projects to provide technical designs, plans and specifications. Provides high level technical tasks while managing and reviewing design related specifications, calculations, reports and plans. Coordinates with internal and external partners including cross-discipline and functional teams to address and problem solve design related issues or concerns.

  • Strong relationships within the industry, and a network of owners and consultants

  • Experience with large capital programs, managing rail/transit programs and project experience required.

  • Performs independent technical reviews, makes recommendations, and provides technical guidance as requested on complex or unusual engineering projects. Provides direction to resolve technical issues as requested.

  • Provides technical expertise and advice to project leadership, and mentoring/support to production staff.

  • Strategic thinker, with demonstrated collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment and gain the support of others

  • Ability to work in a matrix organization focusing on super mega and mega-win projects

  • Able to take ownership and be accountable for projects and personnel

  • Working / technical knowledge of rail systems (Track, Signal, Power, OCS, Railroad Operations, Railroad Structures) and phasing/staging of rail systems and rail infrastructure projects

  • Working knowledge of railway operations / infrastructure preferred, including railroad structures (bridges, stations, shops/yards, and facilities)

  • Experience with MTA C&D, New York City Transit, Metro-North Railroad, Long Island Railroad, Amtrak, New York State DOT, Port Authority of NY & NJ, PATH, and New Jersey Transit, is required.

  • Excellent communications skills and work ethic required and the ability to attend meetings and provide answers to the client a must.

Primary focus will include:

  • Responsible for direction and supervision of a professional/technical group providing rail project development, design and engineering services to rail/transit and other local agencies

  • Responsible for planning, organizing, developing, and maintenance of design engineering programs and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high quality service.

  • Quality control and delivery of projects on-time, on-budget, with quality, and to the clients satisfaction

  • Actively manages client’s budget, schedule and program; HNTB budget and schedule; project communications, documentation, and administers relevant aspects of a formal quality control program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering

  • 12 years relevant experience

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification

  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification

  • Project Management Professional (PMP)

  • Actively manages assigned projects and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.

  • Implements and executes the firm’s Sophisticated Sales Approach, Sophisticated Contracting Approach and Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SSA, SCA, SDA).

  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 12 years of relevant experience

  • Master’s degree in Engineering and 11 year of relevant experience

  • PhD in Engineering and 10 years of relevant experience

Pay Range for New York, NY: $168,781.48 - $269,611.97

  • Actual Compensation will be dependent upon the individual's qualifications, skills and experience as well as physical work location within the state.
