HNTB Group Director - Rail/Transit in New York, New York

What We're Looking For

HNTB is looking for a Group Director - Rail/Transit in our New York, NY office. This person will be responsible for direction and supervision of a multi-disciplinary technical team. This individual will direct project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the best design, inspection, and program/project management capabilities to meet their needs. This individual will be responsible for efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high-quality service, while collaborating with other Rail/Transit HNTB offices to deliver excellent client satisfaction.

Group Director Job Details:

  • Responsibility for the profitable growth and development of our METRO NY Rail/Transit practice as well as the support of firm wide rail/transit initiatives as appropriate

  • Strong relationships within the industry, and a network of owners and consultants

  • Experience with large capital programs, managing rail/transit programs and project experience required.

  • Practice builder and service delivery experience required

  • Strategic thinker, with demonstrated collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment and gain the support of others

  • Ability to work in a matrix organization focusing on super mega and mega-win projects

  • Able to take ownership and be accountable for projects and personnel

  • Working / technical knowledge of rail systems (Track, Signal, Power, OCS, Railroad Operations, Railroad Structures) and phasing/staging of rail systems and rail infrastructure projects

  • Working knowledge of railway operations / infrastructure preferred, including railroad structures (bridges, stations, shops/yards, and facilities)

  • Experience with MTA C&D, New York City Transit, Metro-North Railroad, Long Island Railroad, Amtrak, New York State DOT, Port Authority of NY & NJ, PATH, and New Jersey Transit, is required.

  • Excellent communications skills and work ethic required and the ability to attend meetings and provide answers to the client a must.

Primary focus will include:

  • Responsible for direction and supervision of a professional/technical group providing rail project development, design and engineering services to rail/transit and other local agencies

  • Leading and/or supporting the pursuit of new rail/transit work to support, sustain, and grow the department

  • Coordinating project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the best design capabilities to meet their needs

  • Responsible for planning, organizing, developing, and maintenance of design engineering programs and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high quality service.

  • Assigning priorities and staff to jobs, resolving client and department technical issues

  • Coordinating time and budget on jobs and the collection of cash from clients and limiting/eliminating lost earnings on projects in the department

  • Client contact, business development, and serving as a client service leader for a rail/transit client and contributing to all rail/transit client service teams

  • Project Champion for identified pursuits, take ownership of pursuits/projects and be accountable

  • Identifies and markets additional business opportunities with key clients and development of strategic plans and budgets to meet office expectations and goals

  • Quality control and delivery of projects on-time, on-budget, with quality, and to the clients satisfaction

  • Hiring, supervising, developing, and evaluating staff, as well as establishing and approving budgets for the group

  • Has full managerial responsibility for all aspects of department projects and department project managers including negotiating extras, cost control, staffing, quality control and cash management.

  • Assisting the department project managers and projects that candidate manages with estimating fees, determining scope of work, and preparation of proposals and contracts on large or multiple projects.

  • Actively manages client’s budget, schedule and program; HNTB budget and schedule; project communications, documentation, and administers relevant aspects of a formal quality control program

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master's degree in Engineering



What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Actively manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.

  • Implements and executes the firm’s Sophisticated Sales Approach, Sophisticated Contracting Approach and Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SSA, SCA, SDA).

  • Establishes priorities and work schedules and coordinates resource needs/assignments.

  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.

  • Responsible for the hiring, supervision, mentoring, professional development, evaluation and termination of department staff members.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, Landscape Architecture, Planning, Urban Design or relevant degree

  • 16 years relevant experience

  • 4 years supervisory experience
