HNTB Highway Practice Builder in Oakland, California

What We're Looking For

HNTB has won some of the most interesting and challenging recent highway projects, and we are looking to a practice leader who can take us to the next level.

This role will be tasked with developing a strategy and vision to grow the highway practice in Northern California and Nevada; develop plans around the core areas listed below.

Responsible for direction and supervision of multiple professional or technical groups. Directs project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the best design capabilities to meet their needs. Responsible for efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high-quality service.

Primary Focus Will Include

  • ​Client and project selection

  • Hiring and staff placement

  • Training and development of staff

  • Timeline for growth

  • Key investments needed

  • Implementation of highway practice plan

  • Lead highway practice group

  • Coordinate closely with local departments on staffing needs

  • Coordinate with division and national highway practice resources as needed

Essential Responsibilities:

  • ​Actively manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.

  • Implements and executes the firm’s Sophisticated Sales Approach, Sophisticated Contracting Approach and Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SSA, SCA, SDA).

  • Establishes priorities and work schedules and coordinates resource needs/assignments.

  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.

  • Responsible for the hiring, supervision, mentoring, professional development, evaluation and termination of department staff members.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master's degree in Engineering

  • Requires excellent oral and written communication and negotiation skills

  • Requires ability to interface with client as firm representative

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing and delivering mega projects on-time, within budget and to the satisfaction of the client.

  • Develops and nurtures key client relationships and is the primary company contact on the project.

  • Identifies and markets additional business opportunities with key clients.

  • Sets priorities, secure resources and obtain commitment to work according to the project planned with department managers and section heads.

  • Consistently maintains an overall view for the progress of the assigned project.

  • Oversees the Project Managers and as a functional manager, to support with the right resources, competencies and tools that are available.

  • Ensures the achievement of product quality, project targets, budget control and project profitability over the project portfolio.

  • Communicates effectively with clients to identify needs and evaluate alternative business solutions and strategies.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

  • 16 years engineering experience, including directing large mega projects
