HNTB Section Manager - Overhead Contact Systems (OCS) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
What We're Looking For
The time is right to join HNTB! We are looking for an experienced and technically sound OCS engineer who is ready to be challenged on transit/rail projects that could consist of state of good repair, system modernization or resilience, interlocking improvements, new services or line extensions. The section manager will provides both technical and administrative supervision to the section so as to ensure that technical, administrative, direct labor, and schedule targets of the section are met in accordance with applicable professional standards, design control procedures, company procedures, and technical design guides. They will be responsible for hiring, supervising, developing, evaluating performance, and terminating staff members, as well as establishing and approving budgets for the group. They will also serve as a technical liaison and/or project manager for clients such as, SEPTA, Amtrak, and PennDOT. We offer a flexible work schedule and the position could be located in any of our Pennsylvania offices or virtually.
Primary Focus Will Include:
Preparing or modifying reports, plans, calculations, specifications and estimates of OCS projects.
Collaborating closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects
Serving as technical liaison or task lead with client at staff level for work within the discipline
Coordinating efforts of assigned design team to ensure completeness and accuracy of design within budget and on schedule
Organizing scheduling of specific tasks and assignments
Mentoring less experienced engineers on technical designs
Performing design calculations and conducts investigative analyses toward completion of assigned design tasks, and directs preparation of design specifications.
Performing quality checks of reports, plans, calculations, specifications and estimates of OCS projects.
Preparing of OCS structure, wiring layout plans, assembly and component drawings
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
11 years of design and inspection of catenary systems experience
Professional Engineer Certification
Master's degree in Engineering
Experience with SEPTA, Amtrak and PennDOT Electrification Design and Construction Standards.
Knowledge of code requirements for overhead contact system design
Knowledge of industry standards associated with railway design and operation
Knowledge of the interface with and characteristics of Traction Power Systems
Knowledge of OCS field construction and techniques
Experience in Microsoft Office (Outlook Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Experience with AutoCAD and MicroStation
Experience with STAAD Pro.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Experience in the design of catenary systems and support structures for heavy rail, commuter rail, high-speed rail, light rail, streetcar and trolley power distribution systems including:
Preparing OCS profile design and calculations
Performing structural steel analysis and design capability
Preparing structural design calculations
Performing reinforced concrete foundation design
OCS construction phasing and staging
Production of design drawings on screen in CAD
Development of OCS construction specifications
Estimating OCS construction costs

What You'll Need
Essential Responsibilities:
Develops, monitors and manages the section's operating budget in support of the group or office operating budget and forecast updates.
Responsible for the management, growth and professional development of discipline-specific engineering section. Coordinates section activities establishes priorities and staff to jobs. Ensures staff development, mentoring and training needs are being met. Collaborates with other Sections and Departments within the office on work-sharing needs and opportunities.
Supports the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits in the Section and office, including development of Section-level strategic planning strategies.
Supports the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the Section.
Supports the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process including Work Planning, Monthly Project Reviews and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client's satisfaction.
Assists in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities
Maintains client contacts to ensure client satisfaction
Recruits, hires, develops and retains section staff, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.
Manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 8 years of practical experience including 2 years of leadership experience.
