HNTB Track Design (Rail) - Engineer II in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

What We're Looking For

Responsible for assisting in the production and modification of design calculations, technical reports, engineering plans, construction staging and specifications for assigned passenger, freight and transit projects. This position performs design and delivery in partnership with the project team. Applies engineering techniques, procedures and design criteria for projects ranging in size and complexity. Develops conceptual and detailed designs and calculations to support the project execution using current drawing and technical tools, programs and software such as MicroStation, RailTrack and OpenRail. May develop 3D corridor alignments to model cross sections and contours for drainage and multi-discipline coordination.

HNTB is delivering the largest and most complex rail projects in Pennsylvania and throughout the country - including Amtrak, SEPTA, LIRR, PATCO, Brightline and more. The Pennsylvania office had a diverse set of engineers at all levels and railroad disciplines allowing hands on learning from junior and senior staff for track, OCS, signals, power, structures, civil and more.

Supports transit and railroad projects at all stages from conceptual study and alternative analysis to final design and construction related services. Types of projects may include interlocking renewals, bridge replacements, high speed rail design, new track construction, and station designs.

Candidates with passenger or freight rail experience are preferred, but willing to discuss a career with someone with Civil/Highway experience with knowledge of OpenRoads / InRoads / Civil3D that has a desire to pivot towards a career in Track / Rail design.

What You'll Do:

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.

  • Responsible for preparation and/or modification for select portions of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.

  • Develops project quantities and assists with development of cost estimates.

  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.

  • Able to self-sufficiently complete various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience, or

  • Master’s degree in Engineering and 1 year of relevant experience

What You'll Bring:

  • Responsible for completion of track engineering project elements such as reports, designs, specifications and plans.

  • Develop horizontal and vertical alignments and roadway modeling/cross sections.

  • Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineers.

  • Works closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.

  • Conducts design and constructability reviews of plans.

  • Assists Senior Engineers and Project Managers with preparation of weekly and monthly program updates and reporting.

  • Occasionally visit project sites outside the office.

  • Occasionally supervises and schedules work for other team members.

  • Works in collaboration with other offices within the company.

  • Participates in project working meetings.

  • Participate in client meetings.

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification

  • Knowledgeable in MicroStation, InRail, OpenRail, OpenRoads and/or AutoCAD

  • Exhibits experience with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Exhibits an understanding of the application of engineering geometric, and algebraic principles.

  • Manages time, proactively forecasts, and communicates project development needs.
