HNTB Rail/Transit Group Director in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

What We're Looking For

Join our growing Pennsylvania office in an important and pivotal position as Rail/Transit Group Director. In this role, you will work directly with clients and other stakeholders, as well as HNTB leadership, management, and technical teams to ensure project and program objectives are met while delivering some of the most challenging and complex projects in the region. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a multi-discipline group in the design, development and delivery of project tasks while managing scope, budget, and quality control. The Group Director oversees departments and sections financial metrics to ensure adherence with the group’s goals and in align with office expectations, and collaborates with leadership across the office and division to apply the firm’s strategic sales and planning approaches while assisting with project pursuits and proposals. This position coordinates project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the proper resources at the appropriate time. This position requires a leadership skillset and the ability to direct, inspire, and mentor high performing staff.

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Develop a multifaceted team organization, develop technical scope of work, management of the scope of work, and the commercial performance of the project to meet project goals and objectives

  • Define program goals and devises methods to accomplish.

  • Experience with planning and design of large sized multi-disciplined, complex projects

  • Bring existing relationships with agencies such as SEPTA, Amtrak, PATCO & PAAC.

  • Lead, manage and mentor junior engineers in the design of railroad and transit projects

  • Lead the design and development of plans, specifications, providing reports; confirming tasks are complete, accurate and in accordance with good engineering practices.

  • Participate on HNTB client service teams

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master’s degree

  • 15 years practical experience

  • 6 years supervisory experience

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification

  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification

  • Project Management Professional (PMP)

What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Directs and supervises the development and management of the operating budgets for the departments within the Group and coordination with the office's budget.

  • Responsible for the oversight of the group (multiple departments) activities, establish priorities and assign staff to projects. Collaborate with other groups, offices and divisions on work-sharing needs and opportunities.

  • Drives the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits and markets with the Group and office, including development of strategic planning strategies.

  • Drives the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the group.

  • Drives the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process including Work Planning, Monthly Project Reviews and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client's satisfaction.

  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities

  • Maintains client contacts to ensure client satisfaction. Leads and assists in sales and marketing efforts for department's growth.

  • Assists in the development and execution of the office strategic plan. May participate of the Office Leadership Team (OLT)

  • Recruits, hires, develops and retains department staff within the group, including supporting Department Managers with the development of plans for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession planning.

  • Manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 12 years of practical experience including 4 years of supervisory experience
