HNTB Engineer III - Aviation Civil in Portland, Oregon

What We're Looking For

An exciting opportunity to be a part of HNTB's growing aviation practice in our Bellevue (Seattle) WA office. Engineer III Aviation III works within a broad aviation discipline, and is fully competent to complete engineering-related tasks including research, development, calculations, design and delivery with minimal direction. On tasks basis, is responsible for preparation and completion of discipline engineering efforts that are responsive to project needs. Coordinates preparation of design details, plans, and drawings within assigned task areas.

Engineer III - Aviation Civil

Primary Focus Will Include:

  • Leads development of plans, specifications, estimates and reports for aviation improvement projects, including airfield, landside and terminal areas

  • Develops and maintains design models appropriate to project needs, including: Civil 3D, AviPlan and others.

  • Conducts design, constructability and quality reviews of plans developed by self and others

  • Assists Senior Engineers and Project Managers with preparation of weekly and monthly program updates and reporting

  • Assist Project Manager in guiding team to overall project objectives, including scheduling, directing, mentoring and oversight of work by junior level engineers and technicians

  • Assists Senior Engineers and Project Managers with management of design review and quality review process, and permitting through client and/or outside agencies

  • Communicates results in presentations and in writing, including summaries of benefits and costs

  • Writes technical reports and creates presentations of findings for presentation to a diverse group of client groups and the public

  • Coordinates with clients at project staff level, and directly with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects, including survey, geotechnical, electrical, mechanical, structural disciplines.

  • Provides construction administration (RFI and submittal review) and construction site visits as needed, including coordination with construction engineers, other consulting engineers, utility coordinators, etc.

  • Updates and maintains design schedule for the program

  • Deliver project discipline scope elements within budget and schedule.

  • Builds effective client relationships

Preferred Qualifications and Skills:

  • Passion for aviation/airports

  • 5 - 6 years civil design experience in airports and/or transportation civil engineering design

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D grading and/or utility design

  • Utility and/or storm drainage design and coordination experience

  • Proficiency with airport design standards including FAA Advisory Circulars

  • Proficiency preparing technical construction specifications for airport projects

  • Proficiency in AviPlan and/or AeroTurn familiarity

  • Familiarity with airspace and/or line-of-sight studies

  • Construction administration and/or resident engineering experience

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to conduct engineering design tasks independently, with general oversight and supervision

  • Licensed PE in WA, OR, and/or CO, or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire


What You'll Need

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for completion of discipline engineering project elements such as reports, designs, specifications and plans.

  • Responsible for coordination and productivity of subordinates. Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineers.

  • Works closely with other disciplines and multi-discipline projects.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering

  • 5 years relevant experience
