The time is right to join HNTB! We are currently seeking a Department Manager - Engineering for our Santa Ana, California office.
Responsible for direction and supervision of a large professional or technical group. Coordinates project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the best design capabilities to meet their needs. Responsible for technical coaching and mentoring and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high-quality service.
Actively manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.
Implements and executes the firm’s Sophisticated Sales Approach, Sophisticated Contracting Approach and Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SSA, SCA, SDA).
Responsible for the hiring, supervision, mentoring, professional development, evaluation and termination of department staff members.
Coordinates department activities and assigns priorities and staff to projects.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Department Manager - Aviation
Develop and nurture relationships with key aviation clients in the region as part of the firm, division, and office strategic plans.
Responsible for new business development and winning aviation work.
Responsible for project delivery and performance of assigned aviation staff, consistent with HNTB standards of performance and Vision including management of project budget, quality, schedule and client satisfaction parameters.
Accountable for the development and performance of sales goals and marketing budgets.
Maintain current knowledge of industry services, projects, and trends.
Supervise and mentor staff.
Help maintain industry recognition through prominence in regional and national client and professional associations.
Promote the presence and image of this leading design firm in the marketplace consistent with the strategic communications plan and corporate objectives.
Department Manager - Engineering
Responsible for direction and supervision of a large professional/technical group providing project transportation project development, design and engineering services to DOT’s.
Coordinate project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the best design capabilities to meet their needs. Responsible for planning, organizing, developing, and maintenance of design engineering programs and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high-quality service.
Responsible to lead and/or direct the pursuit of new work to support and grow the department.
Assign priorities and staff to jobs.
Coordinate time and budget on jobs.
Typically manages 15-30 employee’s.
Department revenue usually is in excess of $5 million per year, with a goal to grow to $10 million annually.
Responsible for the hiring, supervision, development, evaluation, and termination of staff members, establishing and approving budgets for the group, and leading business development and pursuits for the Department.
The number of employees directly supervised is typically at least 4.
Department Manager - Rail/Transit
Responsible for direction and supervision of a professional/technical group providing rail project development, design and engineering services to transit and other local agencies.
Responsible for leading and/or supporting the pursuit of new rail transit work to support and grow the department.
Coordinates project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments to ensure clients are provided the best design capabilities to meet their needs.
Responsible for planning, organizing, developing, and maintenance of design engineering programs and efficient, productive utilization of staff in providing high quality service.

Responsible for the hiring, supervision, development, and evaluation of staff, as well as establishing and approving budgets for the group.

Bachelor's degree in Engineering
16 years relevant experience
4 years supervisory experience
Master's degree in Engineering
General Work Conditions
Combination Office and Field Environment: Most work is performed in an office environment in which there is only minimal exposure to potentially unpleasant working conditions. Incumbent must have the ability to stand and sit frequently and reach horizontally as well as vertically for overhead use. Work may infrequently be performed at client’s job site, construction trailer, and in the field. Work may sometimes require working in inclement weather, working in a construction site, being exposed to heavy construction equipment and doing extensive walking. Adherence to applicable safety protocol is required.
